ART: PAINTING
Anna Broome
Statement:
Feminine dissection An exploration of the feminine nature captured in the extremes of the everyday situated by society’s norms and standards. Hence, the dissection, not of the female but of her sexual posture, position, design and wardrobe: exposing the interior feminine as defined by female: sometimes shamed, sometimes promiscuous, sometimes proud, always feminine. After moving to Los Angeles from the conservative South, I witnessed a feminine freedom: Women strutting in neighborhoods, churches, clubs and classrooms in self-satisfying and sexually bold attire and decorations not as a response, retaliation or rebellion to a chauvinistic world, rather as an assertion of feminine – An assertion that afforded me the confidence necessary to celebrate my feminine self via fashion, poetry and these works. Such a new idea deserved a new medium, form. These images of the feminine allow the viewer to see, touch, and experience them and the idea they represent completely. I must also recognize the influence of my Aunt, Patsy Fulmer, a celebrated artist; my Mother, Cathy Craney, whose wisdom and support guided me forward, my bold and honest Sister, Lauren Craney, and my Grandmother, Catherine Cohen, a woman of style, grace, courage, artistic brilliance and love, who inspired those who knew her. Good luck to us all. Anna C. Broome .
