Statement:

I saw a commercial for a “starving artist sale” at the Days Inn, you know the one with paintings of shore lines and lighthouses that come in four assorted colors and three different sizes to match your living-room. “Nothing over $59.95 no matter what the size” (like size makes it worth more). The idea sprouted from there, I set out to do a series of paintings that are all 30 feet long (yes! 30 feet) and 5 feet wide with different styles, subjects, and colors. I’m making you (the collector) part of the artistic process, you pick out the composition, size, and color.

This series of paintings have only been shown at “live” shows so far, I‘m trying to work out a way to bring them to the internet. They are attached to themselves in a large loop and set on rollers, you scroll through the 30 feet of paintings and pick out the section you want. After the show the sold pieces are cut and stretched, they are five feet wide and whatever height you choose. Every painting comes signed with the painting number, certificate of authenticity, ruler marks on the back showing you what portion of the larger piece you have.

You can match your fricken couch for all I care!

Background:

“Art by the Foot is the most innovative art of the 21st century…” Glenn’s Mommy (she won’t call him Alex).

“No! I’m not going to buy a foot of this painting, you still owe me fifty bucks!..” Doug Urquhart

Artist bios and reviews are always in third person so I’m going to pretend that someone else wrote this.

Art by the Foot is a ground-breaking series of paintings done by G. Alex Urquhart. The works are 30 feet tall (yes! 30 feet) by 5 feet wide, with varying colors, styles, and subjects. He calls this series “Art by the Foot” because that’s how he sells them by the foot.

This is the concept:
When the paintings are shown they are attached to themselves in a large loop and set on rollers, you scroll through the 30 feet of work and pick out the section you want, he then cuts and stretches it for hanging. All finished portions are 5 feet wide by whatever height you decide. They are done on canvas with silk screen ink, he uses ink because its flexibility properties for display. Although the pallet of inks are limited, it’s amazing the colors that are achieved by this artist. Every work of art comes signed with the painting number, certificate of authenticity, and ruler marks on the back show what segment of the larger piece you have.

These innovative works involves the collector in the artistic process, you choose the composition, color, size, and style.
